| COME ON
INDIA ! |
|
|
You are
slapped on the right cheek and you offer the
left cheek, because you are expected to be
tolerant. You come from thousands of miles
away, you destroy our cities and our homes,
you kill our children, and we should not
strike back because we are tolerant! Were the
Christians tolerant when they had to face the
sword of Islam? They went on fiery crusades
and fought the Muslims every inch of the way.
Today there is trouble in Europe only where
there are two communities, Christians and
Muslims, not where there are only Christians,
as in Western Europe.
And if the
Christians were not tolerant, why should
Hindus be an exception? We too have our
self-respect, our pride. The Hindus did not go
out of their country and create an empire
through murder, rape and pillage. Why should
others come here and do so? These are the kind
of questions that are being asked in
every Indian home, to which the Romila
Thapars and others have no answer. You cannot
blame the Hindus if they are not going to be
tolerant any more. They too will fight back
and give as good as they receive. This they
have learnt from history, for ultimately
history is made by the brave, not by cowards.
At least historians, even secular historians,
ought to know that.

| Majority
Alienation - The Indian Dilemma |
 |
| The struggle of Hindu society
is not primarily with the Muslim community. The most important
opponents of Hindu society today are not the Islamic communal
leaders, but the interiorized colonial rulers of India, the
alienated English-educated and mostly Left-leaning elite that
noisily advertises its 'secularism'. It is these people who impose
anti-Hindu policies on Hindu society, and who keep Hinduism down and
prevent it from proudly raising its head after a thousand years of
oppression. The worst torment for Hindu society today is not the
arrogant and often violent agitation from certain minority groups,
not the handful of privileges which the non-Hindu communities are
getting. The worst problem is this mental slavery, this sense of
inferiority which Leftist intellectuals, through their power
positions in education and the media, and their direct influence on
the public and political arena, keep on inflicting on the Hindu
mind.

In any country
the majority community lends it a distinct national personality and character.
It is through this identity that the country's distinctive flavour becomes
recognisable throughout the world. A vast country like India can hardly contend
with the problem of majority alienation which today is created largely by people
who spout their personal prejudices against Hindus. It is indeed strange that in
our country Hindus who help earn the country its unique national personality are
maligned and vilified constantly. If Hindus are united, India gets united and
does not disintegrate as prophets of doom want us to believe. The brutal fact is
that Muslim problem today exists because of pseudo-secularism-cum-minoritysm
practised by the Congress and Leftists. Their championing of a wrong cause is
born out of their contempt for democracy. The weak props of intellectuals and
journalists like Praful Bidwai, Dilip Padgaonkar, A. S. Abraham, M. J. Akbar
etc. have been rattled so badly that no word better than 'insanity' can be used
for them today. Their hollow talk of imparting a strong moral and spiritual
dimension to their secular crusade is in disarray and plain anger against Hindus
has replaced it.
It is
often forgotten who made this country secular. No doubt, without majority
opinion the country could never have retained this character particularly when
after effect of rapid communal trauma almost hung over the entire sub-continent
in the wake of partition. Today secularism will be bereft of any political
legitimacy if Hindus increasingly view it as an instrument of irresponsible
appeasement of minorities. It is not easy to forget the politics of shameful
opportunism in which almost every party aligned itself with rabid communal
politics for the sake of Muslim votes. What moral right do they have to put
their accusing finger on those who choose to unite Hindus on a single platform.
Those who talk of the development of a 'Hindu siege mentality' should look to
their own hypocritical commitment to the concept of secularism. The pursuit of
bogus policies has resulted in making us totally rootless and cynical.
The
tragedy with our country's liberals, including leftists of all hues, is
that they ignored the Hindu and were always afraid that an honest owning up of
our cultural heritage linked with Hinduism will shake their secular edifice. Any
reference to Hindu past is an anathema to the liberal and enlightened in India.
Such an intellectual exists on exclusion of the past heritage and can
legitimately be described as a 'cultural neuter'. It is in the name of modernity
that a secularist turns out to be a coward, guilt-ridden and ideologically
non-descript. The word Hindu which should have denoted only cultural ethos is
also tarred. A culturally neutral liberal or one sodden in secularism or a
paranoid Muslim worrying about his identity can hardly call themselves Indian.
Unless we all draw our sustenance from the soil and go back to our roots, we
cannot fight the divisiveness which is caused by theoretical parroting of
secularism.
The
majority today finds itself disadvantaged in his own country because of the
high-pitched slogans which swamped the nation in the wake of freedom related to
composite culture, unity in diversity and secularism. Muslims were indeed
upgraded overnight, were assured of preservation of their denominational
character, while Hindus waited and watched secular consensus forbidding them
assertion of their presence as a majority.
It is
a sorry spectacle that even the word nationalism is being interpreted in a manner
where it could be used as a stick to browbeats Hindus. Nationalism in fact
should be projected as alternative to the separatist messages of casteism and
pseudo-secularism. Unless the values which make Indian culture remarkably
distinctive are examined thoroughly, one would be cosmopolitan or a socialist
without having any real understanding of the society in which one lived. This
strand of nationalism will surely prevent current alienation. We can hardly
overlook that every country has its own rich culture and heritage and in India
the essence of it is Hinduism.
The
process of building up Hindu consciousness and identity aims to fulfill the
ultimate blueprint of a unified Hindu tradition. This unity was lying submerged
for long but reasserts itself today as a reaction to secularist drum-beating.
The awakening of Hindu spirit, or a quest for national self-assertion will have fulfillment
in the liberation of national soul. Hindus have come out of their
stupor, have overcome their inertia and are bound to regain self-esteem.

Questions which Hindus have for the secularists:
-
In India 85% of the population is Hindu. If Hindus are intolerant, how
come Masjids and Madrasas are thriving? How come Muslims are offering Namaz
on the road? How come Muslims are proclaiming five times a day on
loudspeakers that there is no God except Allah?
-
When Hindus gave away 30% of Bharat to the Muslims for a song, why do they
have to beg now for their three sacred places out of thirty thousand
destroyed by the Muslims?
-
When the Constitution of India advocates equal rights to all the citizens,
then why do we have different laws for people of different religious faiths?
Why can't we have a Uniform Civil Code?
-
When Haj pilgrims are given subsidy, why Hindu pilgrims to Amarnath,
Sabarimalai and Kailash Mansarover are taxed?
-
Why are the temple revenues diverted to fund Haj subsidy and the welfare
activities of Muslims and Christians?
-
Why is post-Godhra blown out of proportion, when no one talks of the
ethnic cleansing of four lakh Hindus from Kashmir?
-
If Muslims & Christians are minorities in Maharashtra, UP, Bihar, etc.
are Hindus not minorities in J&K, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh,
Meghalaya, etc.? Why are Hindus denied minority rights in these states?
-
In what way is J&K different from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu or Uttar
Pradesh to have Article 370?
-
Is there one Mullah or Maulvi who has declared a 'fatwa' against
terrorists?
-
Why did Gandhiji object to the decision of the cabinet and insist that the
Somnath Temple should be reconstructed out of public funds, not government
funds, when in January 1948 he pressurised Nehru and Patel to carry on
renovation of the mosques of Delhi at government expenses?
-
When Christian and Muslim schools can teach Bible and Quran, why Hindus
cannot teach Gita or Ramayan?
-
The percentage of Hindus in
Pakistan and Bangladesh after partition in 1947 was 17 and 25 respectively.
Today their percentage is almost nil in Pakistan and 10.5 in Bangladesh.
What happened to the missing Hindus? Do Hindus have human
rights?

OF THE HINDU MENTALITY

MAJORITY
ALIENATION
Ashish Nandy in an article entitled ‘The Fear of Gandhi’ published in
Times of India (April 27, 1994) stated, amongst other things, about
marginalisation of Hindu nationalism, that their idea of a Hindu Rashtra is only
an edited version of the modern nation-state which they want to capture in the
name of ancient faith. While the entire patriotic fringe was labelled as
Nathuram Godse’s successors, he also commented that Hindutva comically mimics
19th century European nationalism. He further drew a dividing line
amongst Hindu nationalists and how they show scant reverence for the plural
culture of Hinduism as they carry in their views a deep hostility towards
everyday Hinduism and ordinary Hindus.

APPEASEMENT: A LEAF FROM THE
PAST
It may seem odd to compare the
inexorable march of communalism and the process of appeasement which led to the
partition of the country in 1947 with what has been happening in the country
today. The same level of arrogance, assault on religious sensibilities of Hindus
and the soft-pedalling by congress which was seen in pre-partition days is being
re-enacted by those who swear by secularism in their bid to stem the rise and
acceptance of Hindu sentiments.

A WALL OF SUSPICION, OF
REJECTION, OF FEAR…
In an attempt to save our
society from its present confusion, many present day thinkers run the risk of
planning it into the likeness of a hell and ultimately into complete
destruction. And all this under the cover of good intentions, which are not
enough to save the world today. This is the predicament of several intellectuals
in our country who are ill-informed quite often about their own roots. At times
it is a result of sterile academic mind with little or no matching wavelength
for the social content in their exercises.

IMPERATIVES
FOR TRUE NATIONAL IDENTITY
A vital
question in today’s context which comes up again and again is whether we are
capable of saving ourselves as a vibrant, alive, unified nation. There is a
tendency in various racial and regional groups to retreat within their shells,
constricting their all-India outlook and by being articulate at the same time.

COPING
WITH A DISINFORMATION
CAMPAIGN
It has
been for quite sometimes that the fourth Estate in our country has been
posturing as infallible, omniscient and judgmental on issues which are quite
sensitive to majority community. It is employing its privileges with abuse.
Those inimical to Hindus are acerbic in their condemnations, condone willful
distortions in reporting and exhibit viciousness in presentation and are
sometimes guilty of tailoring facts. They are sometimes hostile; at other times
they would tell us what good Hinduism should be like, which is rather different
from what Hindus think of it. A section of press first resented ‘modernisation’
then ‘tolerance’ pitting against it supposed bigotry and then got scared about
its ‘ semitisation’. It was however invariably an anti-Hindu theme with suitable
variations.

ZEROING
IN ON HATE AND SLANDER
Secularists in our country have a strange understanding
of social contexts and history. When it comes to writing on Hinduism, no opportunity is missed to drub, slander and ridicule the religion. Trever
Fishlock's 'India File' quoted extensively by reviewers in our papers in 1984, can leave one aghast.

THIS IS COMPLETE DELIRIUM
The indictment of the majority community runs somewhat on
these lines in the print media today:
A rise of nationalism cannot but be a political menace.
The country would be crushed beneath the backward roll of Hinduism. The BJP is
not an organisation seeking to enforce humanism and ecumenism of Hinduism. It is
a well-honed instrument of fraud designed for the pursuit of power by using
Hinduism much the same way that the Third Reich used Aryan purity to usher in
its fascist millennium. This is the most dangerous kind of politics propagating
terror, conflict and hate.

SCREAMING HATRED AGAINST HINDUS : SECULARISTS AND
THE REST OF US
The biggest tragedy which has
befallen the country's tribe of so called analytical and perceptive leftists is
their unbridled exhibition of eagerness to interpret situations which fit in
well in their pre-conceived notions. Their analysis of communal question, their
brand of secularism and their unconcealed glee over the aggressiveness of
minorities is always done from the stand-point of their political
requirements.
