A vital
question in today’s context which comes up again and again is whether we are
capable of saving ourselves as a vibrant, alive, unified nation. There is a
tendency in various racial and regional groups to retreat within their shells,
constricting their all-India outlook and by being articulate at the same time. A
false sense of being a liberal, by glorifying the persecuted or by more
demanding in a bid to counter the imaginary or visible exploitation, some people
want to attract the attention for themselves. The double standards have led to
an attitude that their eyes pass by and refuse to acknowledge the identical
needs, aspirations and demands of other groups. Acting as pressure groups can
always meet another pressure segment achieving the opposite end with equal
vehemence.
We face a
lot of passionate adherents of the dogma. It may be Marxist dogma, Christian
dogma, Islamic dogma and even dogmatic secularism – My dogma is eternally
right and your dogma is eternally damned. As a result, many intellectuals under
above brands toughen their grip on authority and their agility of logic makes
them fiercer in their adherence of chosen dogma. They know that their
ideological planks are incapable of verification but being members of a herd
they cannot live without it. And in the race, Hindus are far behind. Though the
penalties of neglect are not immediately apparent, but if minorities choose to
be more articulate and forsake the democratic norms of respecting majority,
retribution or backlash is sure to be spontaneous. They should stop trading on
faith. The basic contradiction in approach comes in sharp focus when an
intellectual looks at minorities’ sectarian or exclusivist view as a bid to
widening of their self-identity, a different standard is applied for majority.
According to them they bind themselves through obscurantism, “mobilising
themselves into a self-righteous army who must set about bringing every minority
to heel”.
It has been
rightly said that the Indian liberal is shuttling between two worlds today, one
dead and the other powerless to be born. He is a cultural neuter as anything
which glorifies the Hindu past makes him allergic. He is pusillanimous,
debilitated and ideologically non-descript not knowing exactly what is
reversible and what is irreversible.
The creative
mind, for being true to itself, must draw its sustenance from the soil if it is
to live and not just be esoteric curiosity for a small group. India has been
truly derailed and the purpose of whatever has been written in the foregoing is
to drive home the points that without nationalism based on majority faith and
culture, the issue of national unity cannot be solved. The only way to arrest
the centrifugal tendency at work in our country is a reversion to majority faith
being respected.
It does not
merely include adherents of the faith but all others who believe that India’s
salvation lies in a renewed spirit of nationalism. In no country, the majority
which earns the country its distinctive national character and complexion is
maligned as it is in India. If Hindus get united the nation draws greater
strength and does not disintegrate as many writers have been propagating.
Anybody who
cries wolf in this country wins the race in political arena if he can secure
orchestration. Even the beliefs of savages would be glorified if it can assure
props to political structure. Leftist politics is brimming with absurdities and
contradictions. Worship of power is no new thing but it is more harmful today
than it used to be for several reasons. Aggressiveness against culture,
traditions and religions of this ancient land goes hand in hand with appeasement
of those faiths which are keen to expand their base by misrepresentations. The
greater misfortune could befall Hindus because even Marxists would take their
faith as common enemies. Shri D. P. Chattopadhyaya, while praising Islam and
Christianity comes to a conclusion that much is there in Hindu heritage worth
discarding. This reveals their fanatical irrationality and ruthlessness. An
article from A. K. Roy attempts to unravel the political roots of communal
menace. He states that communalism in India is used to contain leftist politics.
It is just crying wolf – a travesty of truth. In fact it is Marxists who acted
as jingoists, sometimes abetting a linguistic group; at times instigating
separatism, exploiting minority grievances. It is often forgotten that any
implanted ideology, irrespective of high dosage of materialism, will have very
superficial acceptance. Never has there been a greater need for a check on the
arrogance or insolence of so called scribes inimical to our ancient faith.
Nehruvian
fantasy for history; secularists’ myth for national identity; appeasement for
politics; calling our deities ‘fizzy concoctions’ – The grand obsession of
an Indian liberal, unabashedly seeking political patronage has been reduced to
these issues. Their intolerance, self-hatred, small-mindedness and colonial
modernity has made them blind to the current realities.
