There are
several church bodies which have perfected the art of slandering Hindus with
finesse. They cloak their motives by putting up a false concern for the Indians
and in this game a section of English print media offers its services, as if,
without any hesitation.
An outfit in
the US which depicted Hinduism as an exploiting religion and extolled
Christianity as the only way of salvation for Indians is named ‘Dayspring
International’. This is Virginia-based organisation and in a two-hour
programme on Manhattan’s cable television network called Hinduism as a
religion that has ‘perpetrated extreme prejudice and bigotry’.
This
organisation has called India as a land of ‘division, despair and death’,
and wants Indians to embrace Christianity. In its TV programme, Hinduism was
ridiculed for having millions of gods and having no fixed system of worship.
They live ‘without spiritual hope’ and according to it were ready to embrace
Christianity. The organisation sought donations from all over the world for
spreading Christianity in India. It also wailed over the fact that though
‘Christianity has been in India for more than 200 years but we have less than
three percent of the population Christian’.
It is a pity that this upstart
and brash Christian organisation has grossly underrated the intelligence of
Hindus. Instead of showing respect for the faith of the majority, such senseless
attack has been made by those who know least about this country or our religion.
Dreaming of conversion at the bidding of dollars, this perverse Christian zeal
and this superiority complex could have been directed to tackle contradictions
in their own society first.
How our own
newspapers, sometimes acting as conscious tools for spreading Christianity, can
attack our religion can be seen from one of the articles published in the
‘Telegraph’, Calcutta giving a profile of Constant Lievens who was the
king-pin of conversion at Ranchi a hundred years ago. Giving a profile of this
missionary, opportunity has been utilised to slap Hindus. Quoting him, the
article states: “Then the Hindus came and robbed them (tribals) of their land
and laid landlord service upon them”. Those who foisted alien faith by
allurement or patronage of British rule are still admired by lackeys in media.
Seeing the pattern of attack on Hinduism by the lobbyist of Christianity any one
can easily identify submerged antagonism for Hindus which surfaces in myriad
ways.
Dom Moraes
was commissioned by MP Government and a book was published entitled “Answered
by Flute; Reflections from Madhya Pradesh”. In a very subtle manner, the book
aims to destroy the very roots of our culture by repeating that tribals have
little to do with India’s history and it need not be foisted on them. Anything
with a touch of the Hindu past has been anathema to the liberal. People like
Moraes build their secular edifice on exclusion of the Hindu past.
The author
who takes as his birthright preaching of an alien faith to these very tribals
finds everything wrong if non-tribals attempt to settle there. The obvious aim
is to put emphasis on the elements of disintegration in the country. Moraes
abhors the idea that the tribals should sing Indian songs, which, according to
him, have no relations with their traditions. He also bemoans the idea of
tribals taking inspiration from Indian heroes and heritage. Indian culture is
alien to the tribals, because “tribals belong to a separate race”. Preaching
of Christianity and converting them, to such dishonest intellectuals, does not
amount to influencing them by alien faiths. Moraes says : “Tribal children are
taught Indian history which concerns people whose activities had nothing to do
with them”.
This
unconcealed provocation signals that such intentions ultimately would be
converted into a bid to balkanise the country. Moraes, we cannot forget,
renounced his citizenship, writing that he was ashamed to be an Indian, when
Indian troops had marched into Goa and liberated it.
The blatant
betrayal of Hindu society by secularist writers and social and political bigwigs
has netted their positions, awards, wealth and success. On the other hand
elitist approach of Hindus lends them a guilt of being communal if they work for
their own society, lest they are dubbed small minded. They would like to be
perceived cosmopolitan, modern and secular. They have to change their entire
mental make-up shedding despair, self-pity, smugness, and self-deprecation.
Malvika
Rajbans Sanghavi in Sunday Midday (December 23, 1990), for example, in her most
venomous piece ‘The Triumph of Godse’ says that she hung “her head in
shame and was embarrassed to be called Hindu” because of Ayodhya movement.
Khushwant Singh called Indo-Gangetic plain as ‘Cow-belt’. He goes on to
comment on the mass wearing of white-skull caps by Muslims, including their
children, as natural because according to him they have to maintain their
separate identity ‘surrounded by hoards of Hindu fanatics’
Rajeev
Gandhi, while on a visit to Syria, had thanked their country for sending
Mohammed Bin Qasim to invade Sindh in 712 A.D. with a message of Islamic
brotherhood. What more guilt-ridden society can achieve when it exalts Islam and
Christianity to the status of almost State religions. Let Hindus in their stupor
today not repent when it becomes too late.
